ABB has invested over €17 million into its Jüri campus in two years – and the factory can now build motors six times more powerful than before, making it Europe’s biggest facility of its kind.
International manufacturing giant ABB, a long standing investor in Estonia, has been making an even bigger bet on its smart industry. The company has invested more than €17 million in its Estonian operations over the past two years, and the group says the money is reshaping what the Jüri technology campus does within its global production network. This year brings a further ramp-up in output and around 100 new hires., writes Aripäev.
Two years, €17 million, and growing trust
Signe Nurms, chair of the management board of ABB AS, said the scale of recent spending speaks to headquarters’ confidence in the Estonian team. The past two years’ investment, totalling more than €17 million, is “a mark of the group’s strong trust” in that team, she said in a press statement.
The 2024 investment came to €8.58 million, with 2025 spending at a similar level. Nurms said ABB Estonia’s 2025 order book reached close to €85M, with the company posting strong profit numbers.
Motors and generators lead the expansion
The biggest shift is in the motors and generators business unit, where output grew by roughly a tenth last year and 80 jobs were added. A factory expansion completed last autumn lets Jüri produce components for motors of up to 60 megawatts, the kind used in large mining equipment, ships and pumping stations. ABB says this makes Jüri, at this scale, Europe’s largest and most capable facility of its type.
That’s a significant step up: the plant previously built mainly motors of up to 5 MW. The new capability opens the door to the 60 MW class, putting Jüri in a different league of industrial supplier.
The Jüri site is also home to a wind generator competence and service centre that serves customers across Europe, refurbishing generators and extending their working life. ABB says this cuts down on material use and waste. The unit doubled its business volume last year and expanded into new European markets.
Frequency converters and same-day motor deliveries
The frequency converter unit marked its 20th year of operation in 2025 and has become one of ABB Estonia’s key product development centres, employing more than 80 engineers who work alongside what the company describes as a testing facility unique in the world. Last year the team launched a new frequency converter cabinet, designed and built in Estonia.
Growth in the electric drives sales and maintenance business has been driven by customers’ rising demand for energy efficiency. To support local sales, ABB built a new electric motor warehouse in Jüri that allows same-day delivery when needed.
ABB: Nearly 1,000 jobs in Estonia
ABB employs close to 1,000 people in Estonia. Last year the company was named Engineering Company of the Year and was again voted the country’s most preferred employer in the manufacturing sector.
