Estonian company Bolt, the leading European shared mobility platform, has acquired Viggo, Denmark’s top-performing taxi company, in a strategic move to expand its presence in regulated European markets. The acquisition enables Bolt to quickly launch and scale ride-hailing services in Denmark, adding to its existing e-bike rental operations in Copenhagen.
“Viggo was founded to provide a high-quality, sustainable taxi experience, and we are proud of what we have achieved. Joining Bolt allows us to scale our impact, benefiting both drivers and passengers with new technology, increased demand, and continued commitment to quality,” said Kenneth Herschel, CEO of Viggo.
Viggo, founded in 2019, operates a fleet of over 300 electric vehicles and serves 450,000 users across Copenhagen and Aarhus. With more than 500 drivers, the company has built a reputation for premium service, high customer satisfaction, and sustainable mobility.
“We have always had a high bar for M&A but we share Viggo’s mission to improve cities and were impressed by their fully electric operations. The acquisition means we will become the largest ride-hailing operator in Denmark.”
Markus Villig, Founder and CEO of Bolt
“We are not entering Denmark as a small player—we are acquiring the best-performing taxi company in the market. By combining Viggo’s local expertise with Bolt’s technology and scale, we will offer riders a seamless, high-quality experience while creating better earning opportunities for drivers,” said Lars Speekenbrink, Regional General Manager Northern Europe at Bolt.
“We are committed to investing in Denmark for the long term—bringing more competition, innovation, and sustainable mobility solutions to cities across the country,” added Speekenbrink.

Bolt already has a strong presence in Denmark through its e-bike rental service, which has attracted hundreds of thousands of users. The introduction of taxis creates a multi-modal transport ecosystem, where customers can seamlessly transition between e-bikes and electric rides, providing an immediate boost in demand for Viggo drivers.

Bolt, founded in 2013, has operations in over 50 countries and 600 cities and provides shared mobility services including taxis, scooter and e-bike rental, and car rental to over 200 million customers. More than 4.5 million drivers use the Bolt platform worldwide. The company seeks to accelerate the transition from owned cars to shared mobility, offering better alternatives for every use case. Its products include taxis, scooter and car rental services, food and grocery delivery, and corporate mobility solutions.
GOOD TO KNOW
- Bolt has collaborated with taxi companies before. In October 2024 Dubai Taxi Company (DTC), a leading provider of comprehensive mobility solutions in Dubai, announced it has signed a strategic partnership with Bolt, to launch its e-hailing platform in Dubai.
- “This landmark strategic partnership brings together DTC’s position as the UAE’s largest fleet owner with over 6,000 taxis and limousines and Bolt’s position as a leading global shared mobility platform,” stated Mansoor Rahma Alfalasi, CEO of Dubai Taxi in October.
