Cybernetica leads major upgrade of vessel traffic system in Malaysia’s most significant port

Cybernetica has been awarded a contract in the development and maintenance project of the vessel traffic management system (VTMS) for the Port Tanjung Pelepas Sdn Bhd (PTP) in Malaysia. The project will be carried out in close collaboration with the Johor Port Authority (LPJ) and PTP, and in partnership with local partner Pinc Technology Sdn Bhd.

“The project, slated for completion by the end of this year, marks a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to enhance port operations and traffic management capabilities at one of Malaysia’s busiest ports,” noted Martin Link, Head of Surveillance Systems at Cybernetica.

In addition, Link remarked that this is the latest in a series of successful collaborations between Cybernetica and Pinc Technology Sdn Bhd, reinforcing a strong partnership in Malaysia.

The new system introduces AI to boost vessel traffic monitoring

The VTMS upgrade aims to modernise the vessel traffic monitoring and management systems previously delivered to PTP between 2015 and 2017. During that time, the vessel traffic monitoring software was provided by Tidalis, while Cybernetica supplied the essential radio communication systems. Given the typical lifecycle of such systems, an upgrade was deemed necessary to ensure their continued reliability, performance, and alignment with modern standards.

The project will involve both software upgrades and hardware replacements where needed. Cybernetica will deliver new radio operator workstations, servers, and updated software solutions.

A key enhancement is the integration of a cross-utilisation capability for radio transceivers between PTP and LPJ Headquarter. This feature will enable operators at both locations to share a common communication platform, enhancing coordination efficacy and reducing workload. It will also enable remote coordination of port operations, further improving operational flexibility.

Additionally, the upgrade will see the introduction of AI capabilities to enhance vessel traffic monitoring and management, a step forward in automating and improving the decision-making process in real-time vessel traffic control.

Addressing key challenges in vessel traffic management

Ports and port authorities rely heavily on VTMS to manage vessel traffic and ensure the safe and efficient flow of goods. The updated system will provide enhanced tools for managing the complex and dynamic environment of port navigation, where local conditions can change rapidly and require precise coordination.

By improving shore-side monitoring and communication, this project will directly contribute to the safety of vessels, the efficiency of port operations, and the protection of the surrounding environment. From tugboats and pilots to port authorities and shipping companies, all stakeholders stand to benefit from the upgraded system, which aims to address the increasing demands of modern maritime traffic.

With the project set to be completed by the end of the year, this initiative promises to strengthen Malaysia’s maritime infrastructure and set a new standard for vessel traffic management systems in the region.
