eAgronom’s new AI device logs farm activity automatically from the tractor cab — so European farmers can focus on the field, not the paperwork.
In Estonia, everything is digital — even growing crops. This week, Estonian climate technology company eAgronom announced that it is building an AI-powered data-collection system to automate farm record-keeping — removing one of the biggest administrative headaches facing European farmers today.
The project, supported by Enterprise Estonia (EIS), centres on a device called Soil Angel: a GPS- and camera-equipped unit that can be fitted to any tractor. Once installed, it streams real-time data to eAgronom’s platform, using computer vision and machine learning to automatically identify what work is being carried out in the field — ploughing, fertilising, sowing — and logs it directly to the farmer’s account.
eAgronom’s competitive edge
Currently, farmers across the EU are required to submit detailed records to government agencies, banks, and carbon programmes. Most do this manually, often long after the actual fieldwork, which increases the risk of errors and missing data — both of which can cause problems when applying for subsidies or carbon payments.
“Our goal is to reach a point where a farmer doesn’t need to open a computer or smartphone to submit data,” said eAgronom CEO Robin Saluoks. “Soil Angel is a clear step in that direction.”
EU reporting requirements are growing increasingly complex, and accurate data is also critical for soil carbon modelling — a key mechanism by which farmers can earn additional income through carbon credit programmes.
eAgronom has already distributed 350 test devices to farmers in Estonia and other European countries to refine the AI models across different weather conditions and field activities. The company has also filed a patent application to protect the technology’s unique components.
EIS innovation chief Mart Toots described the project as a strong example of smart technology reducing administrative burden and making data collection “a seamless part of everyday farm work.”
Previously, eAgronom has raised over €20M in funding, with investors including Soulmates Ventures, SmartCap Green Fund and Swedbank.
