Estonia opened an honorary consulate in Kampala, Uganda, last week. It is the tenth Estonian honorary consulate in Africa.
The Estonian honorary consul in Uganda is IT entrepreneur Girisch Nair. He stated that Estonia’s e-government provides transparent and inclusive services, serving as an excellent example for Uganda.
“Honorary consuls play a vital role in extending Estonia’s foreign service in countries where we do not have official representations. Girisch Nair’s excellent network of contacts helps promote both economic and development cooperation,” said Kairi Saar-Isop, Director of the Department of Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Aid.
Dr Chris Baryomunsi, Uganda’s IT Minister, also attended the opening of the honorary consulate, where he emphasised that Uganda is taking its first steps in the digital revolution and that learning from Estonia can help reduce the digital divide between the North and South.
Uganda is one of Estonia’s target countries for development cooperation in Africa, focusing on digitalisation and education.
