Estonian food tech company Thormi has introduced a groundbreaking plant-based meat alternative, offering a new solution in the alternative protein market. Using an advanced wet extrusion technology, Thormi’s product mimics the taste and texture of pulled meat, while being free from gluten, additives, and common allergens.
With support from PRIA and investors, Thormi acquired a state-of-the-art extrusion machine, unique to the Baltics and Scandinavia. In collaboration with TFTAK scientists, they developed the next generation of meat and fish analogues. Their first product, a pulled chicken alternative made from pea protein, is already on the shelves in Estonian supermarkets, available in Asian-style sauces.
“Our goal is to be able to compete with meat on price by next year, and that’s a real breakthrough.”
Peeter Tava, CEO of Thormi.
Tava highlighted the growing demand for plant-based options, saying, “Global trends and increasing consumer awareness are fueling the rise of plant-based alternatives.”
“The initial feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. People have been waiting for a product with this kind of taste and composition for a long time,” noted Tava. He also emphasized the health benefits, stating that the new generation of plant-based meat alternatives is not only additive-free and environmentally friendly, but also rich in nutrients like fiber, which many Europeans lack in their diets.
Thormi is now raising funds to expand to neighboring markets and license their technology globally. “This is just the beginning,” Tava added, “We’re ready to bring our innovative products to a wider audience and make a global impact.”
