Icosagen invests €45M to bring biologics discovery and GMP manufacturing under one roof

Estonian biotechnology company Icosagen has completed a €45M expansion project that brings therapeutic protein discovery, development and GMP manufacturing to Tartu

Icosagen expansion brings drug discovery, development and GMP manufacturing together at one Tartu site, strengthening the Estonian biotech company’s ability to serve international biologics clients from early research to clinical supply.

Estonian biotechnology company Icosagen has completed a €45M expansion project that brings therapeutic protein discovery, development and GMP manufacturing under one roof, writes Ärileht. The investment gives the Tartu-based company a more integrated setup for supporting biotechnology and pharmaceutical customers developing complex protein therapeutics.

Icosagen expansion adds a new GMP manufacturing base

Supported by an €18M European Investment Bank loan under the InvestEU programme, together with Icosagen’s own funding, the project included a new single-use GMP manufacturing facility built to European regulatory standards. According to the company, the expanded site now allows clients to move from discovery and developability assessment to CMC development and phase I/II GMP manufacturing within one organisation and at a single location.

The move also completes a multi-year buildout that had been presented as a way to deepen Estonia’s biologics capability and give international drug developers a more complete partner in the region. For Icosagen, the practical gain is not only added capacity but a tighter connection between early scientific work and later manufacturing steps.

That matters because biologics programmes often slow down when discovery, development and manufacturing are spread across multiple partners. By tightening those handovers, Icosagen is positioning itself as a more seamless provider for drug developers that want to move candidates toward the clinic faster.

Icosagen’s core business is end-to-end biologics development

One of Estonia’s premier HealthTech companies, Icosagen operates as a contract research, development and manufacturing partner for biotech and pharmaceutical companies, specialising in antibody- and protein-based therapeutics from mammalian cell culture. Its services span antibody discovery, protein engineering, cell line development, process development, analytics and GMP manufacturing, giving clients a way to advance biologics programmes without building every capability in-house.

According to the company, it has spent nearly three decades developing expertise in therapeutic proteins, antibodies and complex recombinant biologics, and now employs more than 200 scientists. That experience is particularly relevant for newer or less standard biologic modalities, where manufacturability questions often need to be addressed much earlier in the process.

The investment deepens Tartu’s biotech role

For Estonia, the project is another sign that local life sciences companies are moving into more advanced and higher-value production capability alongside research expertise. In Icosagen’s case, the expansion strengthens Tartu’s position as a biotech base that can support not only scientific discovery but also early clinical manufacturing for international customers. It also means more of the biologics value chain can stay in Estonia rather than being handed off abroad too early.
