Skeleton Technologies signs AI power MoU with Infineon

Estonian high-power energy storage company Skeleton Technologies has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Infineon Technologies to explore solid-state transformers and supercapacitor-based sidecars for more efficient and resilient AI data-centre power systems.

The companies announced the collaboration on 4 September, saying it will cover the power chain from the grid to the core of an AI data centre. The partnership brings together Infineon’s power-semiconductor technology and Skeleton’s power-conversion systems and supercapacitor expertise, writes Skeleton Technologies.

Power conversion from grid to core

The agreement focuses first on next-generation solid-state transformers for medium-voltage AC to high-voltage DC conversion. The companies aim to combine Infineon’s high-voltage CoolSiC™ power semiconductors with Skeleton’s power-conversion systems and supercapacitor technology.

Solid-state transformers can support more efficient control of electricity as it moves through the data-centre power chain. For operators building AI infrastructure, the requirement is not only to supply more electricity but also to manage higher power density while maintaining reliable operation.

Peak shaving for dense AI infrastructure

The collaboration will also cover gallium nitride-based peak-shaving systems. These sidecars will combine Skeleton’s supercapacitor technology with Infineon’s CoolGaN™ power semiconductors to help manage fluctuations in demand and deliver power at speed.

Skeleton CEO Taavi Madiberk said power density is becoming a defining constraint for AI infrastructure. “AI data centers need to deliver dramatically more power to increasingly dense GPU infrastructure, without allowing the power system itself to consume more space,” he said.

Skeleton’s work on high-power storage for data centres sits alongside its international grid-stabilisation projects, including a collaboration to develop next-generation grid technology in Korea. The company’s systems are designed for applications where rapid power delivery, conversion efficiency and resilience are central requirements.

Two technology platforms in one power architecture

Infineon Executive Vice President and Chief Sales Officer of Industrial and Infrastructure Andreas Weisl said the collaboration addresses changing requirements created by AI workloads. “By combining Infineon’s expertise in power semiconductors with Skeleton’s innovation in supercapacitor technology and power conversion systems, we are driving the development of highly efficient and resilient power architectures,” he said.

Under the MoU, the two companies will jointly explore architectures intended to improve energy efficiency, power density and system reliability across the AI data-centre power chain. They also said the approach could help reduce the total cost of ownership for data-centre operators.

The partnership gives international data-centre and power-infrastructure developers a combined technology platform spanning conversion, storage and peak-load management. It also links Estonia-based high-power energy-storage expertise with a global semiconductor supplier as AI computing drives demand for denser and more resilient electricity systems.
