Stargate Hydrogen takes over HySTAT stack business from Cummins

Estonian electrolyser technology company Stargate Hydrogen has taken over Cummins’ legacy HySTAT alkaline electrolyser stack business

Estonian electrolyser technology company Stargate Hydrogen has taken over Cummins’ legacy HySTAT alkaline electrolyser stack business, becoming the approved manufacturer and distributor of replacement stacks for more than 400 installed systems across 65 countries.

The agreement covers replacement stacks and related services for an installed base representing more than 1,000 stacks, the company said in its announcement.

Supporting an established hydrogen fleet

Under the agreement, Stargate will support the legacy HySTAT alkaline electrolyser stack business and help customers maintain system performance and extend the operating life of their equipment. The company will serve an installed base that includes one of the world’s largest alkaline electrolyser fleets.

Cummins’ product material describes HySTAT as a modular alkaline electrolyser system designed for indoor or outdoor installation, with recommended applications between 100 and 300 Nm³ per hour. The system is designed for on-site installation and can be scaled through simple interconnectivity, according to Cummins.

Stargate moves from technology development to industrial delivery

The agreement strengthens Stargate’s presence in established hydrogen markets and expands its customer base among industrial gas companies operating hydrogen production systems worldwide. Founded in 2021, the company has gradually increased its manufacturing capabilities while focusing on large-scale hydrogen production. Stargate Hydrogen is backed by investors including Repsol and lists Fortum, Utilitas, ABB and Rockfin among its customers, with projects across Europe, Turkey and India.

“This agreement is first and foremost about maturity,” said Marko Virkebau, Chief Executive Officer of Stargate Hydrogen. “We are proud to continue the legacy of the HySTAT platform, which has served customers reliably over multiple decades and has been proven through hundreds of thousands of operating hours in real industrial conditions. Being selected by Cummins to carry this responsibility demonstrates confidence in our engineering, our manufacturing capabilities, and our commitment to supporting customers for the long term.”

Creating a platform for further growth

“We selected Stargate Hydrogen because we believe they have the technical expertise, commitment, and long-term perspective required to support the customers,” said Tim Proctor, Executive Director of Electrolyser Engineering at Accelera by Cummins.

The aftermarket business gives Stargate recurring demand for replacement stacks and a stronger presence in international hydrogen markets. The company expects the transition to support continued growth while creating opportunities for future deployments of its own proprietary electrolysis technologies.

Stargate develops industrial hydrogen production systems for infrastructure and energy resilience projects. Its precious-metal-free alkaline electrolysers are designed for energy-intensive industries transitioning away from grey hydrogen, including refining, ammonia, methanol, e-methane and steel production.
