The Estonian Defence Resources Agency collaborated with TalTech to promote technologies and effective technical solutions for national defence.
The agency provides engineering and IT students with national defence problems to tackle as part of their studies and as topics for their final theses. Additionally, it helps the university locate supervisors with expertise and experience in national defence. The first tasks have already been assigned to the students.
According to Aare Jamnes, Head of National Defence Education at the Defence Resources Agency, several IT-related development opportunities in national defence are within the reach of students already studying at the bachelor’s level. “For example, TalTech will start by creating a minefield passport application to position and map minefields automatically,” said Jamnes.
Digital solutions determine the success of defence capabilities
Captain Major in the Reserve and Lecturer at the Seebeck Institute of Electronics at the Technical University, Mari-Anne Meister, understands that the battlefield today, as portrayed in the media, is digital and technologically diverse. “Those with a better overview, more precise weapons, and smart fighters gain the advantage. Radio-controlled electronic equipment enables precise control across various applications, from drones to military systems. TalTech can contribute to and support advancements in this area of defence.”
The cooperation agreement outlines the dissemination of information regarding various career opportunities in national defence. One notable initiative from this agreement is the the agency’s scholarship program, available for engineering and technical education students. Applications for this scholarship can be submitted annually between November and December.
