Estonian startup secures Fingrid tender, marking a globally significant project win

"This project is globally relevant in demonstrating that sensorless Dynamic Line Ratings offer a scalable, reliable, and rapid way to unlock unused headroom in existing lines,” commented Gridraven’s CEO Georg Rute.

Gridraven, the Estonian energy tech company, won the public procurement for the digitalisation of the Fingrid transmission network in Finland. The contract covers five 400 kV lines totaling 700 km and has an option to expand toward national coverage by the end of 2025.

Gridraven will deploy Dynamic Line Rating (DLR) across the country’s high-voltage transmission network. The project affects how grid capacity is calculated and managed, unlocking flexibility and efficiency without building new infrastructure.

“We are proud to be selected by Fingrid as the solution provider for increasing the capacity of their transmission grid. This project is globally relevant in demonstrating that sensorless Dynamic Line Ratings offer a scalable, reliable, and rapid way to unlock unused headroom in existing lines. Fingrid is leading the way in embracing innovative solutions, and we’re excited to help accelerate their impact,” commented Gridraven’s CEO Georg Rute.

First phase covers 700 km of transmission lines

The technology has already been field-tested in several pilot environments. While long-term impacts will depend on operational experience, DLR solutions like Gridraven’s are increasingly viewed as a viable tool to improve the efficiency of existing transmission assets.

„Dynamic Line Rating enables us to operate our transmission system more efficiently and with better real-time insight into grid conditions,” said Mikko Piironen, Unit Manager at Fingrid. Fingrid   secures   reliable electricity   for   customers   and   society   and   shapes   the   clean   and   market-oriented electricity system of the future.

“Because the solution is fully software-based and requires no physical installations, it allows us to scale DLR across the entire 400 kV network. This project marks an important step in modernizing grid operations and helps maximize the use of existing infrastructure.”

The contract covers five 400 kV lines totaling 700 km and has an option to expand toward national coverage of 5500 km by the end of 2025.

Fingrid can now unlock up to 30% additional power annually

Gridraven’s software-only solution increases grid capacity while eliminating the need for hardware or sensor installations on grid assets. It provides high-accuracy transmission capacity forecasts through precision weather forecasting based on detailed topography data and advanced AI modeling, achieving precision even in challenging terrains.

Estonian startup Gridraven, whose AI-driven Dynamic Line Rating technology addresses grid bottlenecks and unlocks up to 30% more grid capacity annually, raised 4 million euros funding in January 2025 and expanded into the United States with the registration of its subsidiary.

This enables transmission system operators like Fingrid to operate their power grid closer to physical limits with full transparency and safety, optimizing existing grid assets for a more efficient and resilient energy system. This precision weather forecasting-based Dynamic Line Rating technology promises to unlock up to 30% additional power annually from the existing grid.

Beyond its grid-enhancing impact, the technology boosts economic growth by enabling more renewable energy integration and reducing infrastructure investment needs.

GOOD TO KNOW

  • Gridraven’s system optimizes the grid by leveraging AI weather models, allowing power lines to carry more power during favorable conditions.
  • This breakthrough technology can unlock more capacity for grid operators today, speeding up renewable energy integration and lowering energy costs globally.
  • The company successfully tested this solution and are partnering with leading utilities to enhance grid performance and resilience.
