The new security order in Europe has reshaped the logic of the defence industry — the UK is seeking rapid innovation and battlefield-proven technologies that Estonia can provide, notes Andreas Heiki Pant, Enterprise Estonia´s UK-based export advisor integrating Estonian companies into UK supply chains.
The abrupt change in the European security situation has forced the UK defence industry to reassess its main priorities. While the country’s focus was previously on the Indo-Pacific region, the full-scale war in Ukraine has redirected attention back to Europe.
“Estonian technologies, such as drones, sensors, unmanned ground vehicles, cybersecurity solutions, and dual-use systems, have been tested by Ukrainians under real-world conditions. This has led to continuous refinement and improvement. Estonian companies are accustomed to innovation being born in hours — not months or years.”

British defence policy and the new defence strategy increasingly emphasise the integration of deep technologies, strengthening cybersecurity, and a greater role for domestic industry in defence procurement to boost local production. The importance of involving small and medium-sized enterprises to accelerate innovation and product development has also been underscored. All of this supports the central theme of the British defence sector: a continued commitment to a NATO-first policy.
Innovation is born in hours
The UK defence industry is currently facing significant challenges. A major leap forward in automation is required. In addition, it is crucial to catch up with rapidly developing countries and their defence industries in implementing AI, robotics, and other technologies used for military operations. The war in Ukraine has transformed the tools that militaries require today.
“Cooperation with Estonian firms provides the British with access to solutions that have already proven their effectiveness on the battlefield.”
Andreas Heiki Pant, Enterprise Estonia export advisor
A shift in mindset is necessary to take these steps. In defence, military mindset and technological development must go hand in hand. This calls for greater flexibility — something Estonian entrepreneurs and defence innovators can offer.
The strength of Estonia’s defence industry lies in its practical experience gained during the war in Ukraine. Their technologies, such as drones, sensors, unmanned ground vehicles, cybersecurity solutions, and dual-use systems, have been tested by Ukrainians under real-world conditions. This has led to continuous refinement and improvement. Estonian companies are accustomed to innovation being born in hours — not months or years.
Battlefield-hardened technologies
This gives Estonian companies a competitive advantage that the UK defence industry can leverage. Cooperation with Estonian firms provides the British with access to solutions that have already proven their effectiveness on the battlefield.
“If the Estonian company SensusQ can support the British Army with its AI-based intelligence and decision-support software to enhance the UK’s digital targeting capabilities, it is clear that Estonia’s defence sector has the potential to offer even more.”
Andreas Heiki Pant, Enterprise Estonia export advisor
The Estonian defence industry offers the British more than just products — it brings experience, speed, flexibility, and strategic cooperation. This enables the UK to accelerate innovation, strengthen its position in Europe, and deploy tested solutions that have demonstrated reliability and effectiveness in the most demanding environments. Estonia is ready to deliver.
The potential for cooperation between the UK and Estonian defence industries is substantial. If the Estonian company SensusQ can support the British Army with its AI-based intelligence and decision-support software to enhance the UK’s digital targeting capabilities, it is clear that Estonia’s defence sector has the potential to offer even more.
