Estonia is a prominent exporter of wooden houses in Europe, thanks to its rich tradition in wood construction and extensive forest resources. Combining Nordic craftsmanship with advanced digital technologies, Estonia emphasises quality, durability, and sustainability in construction. Steve Cesse, an Export Advisor at Enterprise Estonia, explains why Estonia is a country worth considering if you seek partners in the wood sector.

The use and architecture of wood are deeply rooted in Estonian culture and construction. Why is wood an integral part of Estonia’s identity, both historically and moving forward?

First of all, it should be noted that forests cover more than 50% of Estonia’s territory. Consequently, forests are an integral part of the inhabitants’ daily life and play a central role in the country’s economic activity.

Centuries of forestry tradition are embedded in Estonian culture, which has allowed the inhabitants to acquire solid expertise in the use of wood. Therefore, It is unsurprising that the country has now risen to the top of European wooden house exports. We are convinced that the use of wood is only just beginning. Wood is part of our history and future.

Why is Estonia considered a Nordic country rather than an Eastern European country in the construction sector?

Although Estonia is geographically a Baltic country, its culture and expertise in wood are closely aligned with those of its Nordic neighbours.

Wood construction quality can be compared to that of Nordic countries. Many of our companies use traditional Nordic construction techniques to design high-quality wooden buildings resistant to harsh climates.

Additionally, Nordic inspiration is evident in the architecture, which gives wooden products a distinctive design. Iglucraft has effectively employed these Nordic construction techniques to create handcrafted wooden houses with unique shapes, which have already gained significant success in France!

FACTS ABOUT ESTONIA
51%of Estonia is covered by forests.
#1 exporter of prefabricated wooden houses in Europe.
3b € of yearly export value for the industry.
16% of the added value created in Estonia is by the wood sector.

What is the role of technology in the wood value chain?

Estonia is one of the most digitised countries in the world, and this digital culture strongly impacts the wood industry. Digital solutions are integrated throughout the entire wood value chain. For instance, foresters can use the Timbeter digital application to accurately measure logs, while manufacturing sites have digitised and automated their production processes.

Technology will also play a significant role in creating high-value-added wood products. For example, Thermory was the first company in the world to thermally modify hardwoods and dense woods like oak on an industrial scale. This process enhances the wood’s durability while maintaining its natural appearance. Moreover, innovation knows no bounds in Estonia. The company Fibenol utilises wood residues to create new bio-based materials that can replace fossil fuel-based products, including road asphalt.

What trends are evident in the global construction sector, and how could the Estonian wood industry benefit from them?

Despite facing a significant crisis, wood construction is steadily gaining popularity in several countries, particularly in France. Wood is recognised as a crucial resource in the fight against climate change, enabling industries to reduce their CO2 emissions.

Our companies are highly qualified to assist with a variety of projects, from the installation of wooden houses to the construction of multi-story buildings. For instance, Kodumaja successfully contributed to constructing a 14-story, 51-meter-high wooden residential tower in Bergen, Sweden.

“Estonia is one of the most digitised countries in the world, and this digital culture strongly impacts the wood industry.”

What opportunities for collaboration do you see between French companies and Estonian wood and construction companies?

Wood also plays a significant role in France, creating synergy between French and Estonian companies. In addition to providing high-quality products, these companies can share their technology to collaborate on complex construction or renovation projects.

Our expertise extends beyond wood. At Batimat, we welcomed several companies that provide various solutions in the construction sector. For instance, Heat3 offers durable packaging for construction companies, while Vecta Design specialises in the design of stretch ceilings and high-quality decorative ceiling solutions. As a result, we have numerous opportunities for collaboration!
