Fibenol and Taisei sign MoU to develop decarbonised bio-asphalt for the Japanese market

Fibenol, an Estonian clean technology company, and Taisei Rotec Co., Ltd., a leading Japanese road construction company, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a strategic partnership for the development and commercialisation of sustainable bio-asphalt mixtures in Japan, reports Taisei Rotec.

Under the agreement, Taisei Rotec will conduct exclusive technical verification in Japan of Fibenol’s high-purity lignin product, Lignova. The material will be combined with Taisei Rotec’s patented multi-stage mixing process to develop highly durable, decarbonised pavement solutions capable of withstanding heavy vehicle traffic.

By partially replacing conventional petroleum-derived asphalt with Lignova, the partners aim to reduce emissions associated with asphalt production while enabling carbon derived from woody biomass to be fixed directly into road infrastructure.

“This collaboration demonstrates what becomes possible when advanced technology and strong ambition align. Through Lignova, we are committed to bringing low-carbon innovation into everyday infrastructure. Together with Taisei Rotec, we share the responsibility of advancing cleaner and more sustainable road solutions,” said Peep Pitk, Chief Development Officer of Fibenol.

Addressing lifecycle emissions in road construction

Reducing CO₂ emissions is a critical priority in the construction sector. In road infrastructure in particular, environmental impact must be addressed across the full lifecycle, from raw material production and construction to long-term operation.

Fibenol produces high-purity lignin from lower-quality hardwood using its proprietary Sunburst technology. Lignova serves as a renewable alternative to fossil-based materials in industrial applications. Taisei Rotec contributes advanced pavement design expertise aligned with Japan’s stringent quality standards, as well as access to a full-scale pavement test course capable of replicating real operating conditions.

The MoU formalises discussions held during 2024 and strengthens cooperation aimed at introducing low-carbon pavement materials to the Japanese market.

Bio-asphalt testing is currently underway at Tamura city

Long-term durability testing is currently underway at Tamurabo, a pavement evaluation facility in Tamura City, Fukushima Prefecture. The site is Japan’s first privately operated road dedicated to demonstrating and evaluating next-generation pavement technologies. Testing includes heavy and autonomous vehicle traffic simulations.

Based on the results, the partners aim to establish technical standards for a bio-asphalt mixture adapted to Japan’s climate and traffic conditions. The companies will also assess long-term carbon fixation performance and explore opportunities for utilising domestic biomass resources. The intention is to propose these standards to local governments and road administrators.

GOOD TO KNOW

The bio-asphalt mixture under development will:

  • Replace a portion of petroleum-derived asphalt with high-purity lignin Lignova, enabling carbon fixation within pavement materials.
  • Apply Taisei Rotec’s patented multi-stage mixing technology to optimise compatibility between lignin and asphalt, overcoming traditional durability challenges associated with bio-based materials.
  • Utilise standard asphalt plants and existing construction equipment, enabling practical and scalable implementation without major infrastructure changes.
