When you think of Estonia, what comes to mind? For many, it’s Skype. Estonia is recognised as one of the most digitally advanced countries in the world. Recently, Estonia announced its ambition to become a leading sustainable and green energy powerhouse, aligning with the global trend toward carbon neutrality, reported South Korean news site MTN.
Estonia, one of the three Baltic countries, is taking steps to become a green energy powerhouse. The goal is to achieve the highest per capita green energy production worldwide, noted MTN.
Hydrogen energy is becoming an increasingly important industry between Estonia and South Korea, driven by the Korean government’s ambitious decarbonisation targets. Hydrogen is considered the ultimate future energy source. By 2050, the hydrogen industry will create 30 million jobs and generate 1.35 trillion euros globally.
Elcogen, a leading Estonian manufacturer of technology that enables the delivery of efficient, affordable green hydrogen and emission-free electricity, is a notable example from both trade and investment perspectives. In October 2023, HD Hyundai Group made a strategic investment of €45m in Elcogen’s Solid Oxide technology to further deepen collaboration on emission-free power generation systems as well as green hydrogen production.
Elcogen exported over €1 million worth fuel cells and stacks to Korea in 2023, tripling its exports compared to previous years. H2Electro also made significant strides, delivering its first fuel cell (SOEC) to a Korean reseller in September 2024.
Estonian is making a global impact in green energy
In the fall of 2024, MTN journalists visited Estonia to highlight the country’s growing energy and cleantech sector. Estonian entrepreneurs shared how they’re shaping a greener future, from smart grids to hydrogen technologies.
MTN interviewed some of Estonia´s most innovative companies, such as StargateHydrogen, GaltTech, Skycorp Technologies, H2Electro, Elcogen, Eesti Energia, and Enefit Green, to explore their cutting-edge technologies and sustainable solutions and showcase how Estonia is making a global impact in clean energy. Tartu University, The Ministry of Climate of Estonia and the City of Tartu also shared their future projects regarding green and hydrogen energy.
MTN published three articles, three news clips and a 30-minute documentary about the Estonian energy sector:
