With innovative solutions for modular design, digital integration, and building sustainability , Estonia is setting new benchmarks in solving the current challenges in the construction industry. Eleven leading Estonian companies will showcase their expertise at the BAU Munich 2025 trade fair, presenting answers to some of the most pressing challenges facing the building sector today.
The BAU 2025 highlights critical themes such as “Transformation of Urban and Rural Spaces” and “Climate-Adapted Construction,” focusing on sustainable solutions for the future of living and building. At Stand 109, in Hall 5, Estonian companies offer cutting-edge responses to these challenges, demonstrating how modular wooden construction, digital technologies, and serial renovation processes reshape the industry.
Visitors can explore these groundbreaking innovations also during a keynote presentation and a networking happy hour at the Estonian stand.
Sustainable solutions for the German market
Germany faces significant challenges in making its existing building stock climate-neutral. Similarly, Estonia aims to renovate 80% of its multi-family housing stock from the 1960s to 1990s by 2050, reducing heating energy consumption by up to 65%.
Estonian companies are pioneering innovative approaches to achieve these ambitious goals: modular and serial renovation solutions – as Matek proves – significantly reduce construction times, save resources, and address the skilled labor shortage. The company has already completed 12 multi-family housing renovation projects in Germany, offering prefabricated wooden frame facade elements that are energy-efficient and easy to install.
Estonia is also a leader in wooden construction, with one in four wooden houses in the EU originating from Estonia. These prefabricated solutions cut construction timelines by half and enhance sustainability.
“Estonia’s modular construction and renovation solutions offer a decisive advantage by cutting construction times by up to half through prefabrication in controlled environments. This provides an essential advance in meeting the industry’s growing demand for efficiency and sustainability. For example, a six-story residential building with 60 apartments made from wooden frame modules requires just 5.5 months to complete, including industrial prefabrication and on-site assembly,” explains Annika Kadaja, General Manager of the Estonian Woodhouse Association.
Innovation Through Digitalization and Efficiency
Estonia’s expertise extends beyond modular building. The country’s innovators are integrating advanced digital tools to enhance efficiency and sustainability further: Wenture‘s Product Information Management (PIM) system optimizes construction by centralizing and synchronizing product data, helping companies reduce errors, lower costs, and improve collaboration. Bisly‘s cloud-based building automation solutions save up to 40 tons of CO₂ and 30-50% of energy in medium-sized buildings while reducing overhead costs by up to 80%.
Estonia is also making significant strides in urban construction with Arcwood‘s Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) solutions. As an environmentally friendly material that stores carbon and requires significantly less energy than concrete or steel, CLT is ideal for modern schools, sports halls, and multi-story buildings. This innovation offers a sustainable and versatile option for contemporary architecture.
Avrame‘s A-frame houses and ÖÖD‘s mirror houses are prime examples of how modern modular solutions seamlessly blend with natural surroundings, providing energy-efficient and visually striking alternatives for residential and eco-tourism projects.
